Let's make Auckland the world’s first Fair Trade Super City!
Wellington and Dunedin have done it! Even cities as big as London, Boston and Adelaide have got it…Come on Auckland, let’s be the FIRST Fair Trade SUPER City in the world and demonstrate the city’s commitment to sustainable, ethical trading partnerships and to supporting producers in the developing world.
Why become a Fair Trade City?
Conventional trade often let’s down the world’s poorest - the people at the very start of the supply chain. Action in your area can and does have impact on communities thousands of miles away. Make those choices count by supporting businesses that make trading fairly part of what they do and take part in putting people first by helping Auckland become a Fair Trade City.
How to become a Fair Trade City?
We need to achieve 6 internationally recognised goals to get Fair Trade status. This includes:
- The council signing a resolution supporting fair trade in principal (sign our petition to demonstrate your support of that).
- At least 1 retail outlet selling fair trade products for every 5000 people. That means a minimum 280 shops for the whole of Auckland.
- A similar amount of enterprises - businesses, schools, clubs and churches also supporting and promoting fair trade. See how you can become a Fair Trade Community here: www.fairtrade.org.nz
